Abstract:
In Russia and many other countries, population ageing raises a number of common challenges associated with socio-economic development. At the current stage, there is a shift from the negative perceptions of ageing to more positive views on this process, and this trend is reflected in academic literature. The aim of this study is to systematize the theoretical and methodological approaches to defining age and to age periodization. A special focus is made on the interdisciplinary approach to these problems. The study traces the evolution of the social and economic concepts and theories of age and ageing, pointing out their strengths and weaknesses from the perspective of the contemporary demographic processes. The research findings can be used for further studies in the field as well as for policy-making in the socio-economic and demographic sphere.
