Abstract:

The paper presents a study that aimed to reveal institutional essence of social innovations, which makes possible to operationalize this category in the framework of applied economic research. To achieve the goal of the study, the main approaches of social innovation study were described; identifying the patterns of formation and development of social innovations, as well as comparing the role of social innovations in the transformation of the socio-economic system, the institutional nature of social innovations is substantiated. The cyclicality and spiraling of social- innovative activity are shown as an integral part of the social innovation development of the system in the paper. The theoretical significance of the results obtained is to expand the provisions of the theory of social innovation in terms of demonstrating their institutional nature. The practical significance lies in the possibility of applying the results obtained to design the institutional environment of social and innovative development.
