Theoretical Frameworks of the Development of Efficiency Indicators for Lean Manufacturing

Abstract:

Long-term lean manufacturing principles are acknowledged as the source of competitive advantage. However, there are certain difficulties in the practical complex assessment of the effectiveness of implemented solutions and principles. The purpose of this study is to develop a scientifically based system of efficiency indicators for industrial enterprises to discuss possible peculiarities of its implementation as well as the key factors that should be taken into account when making decisions. The achievement of this goal within the framework of this study involves a review of theoretical and empirical research in the subject area as well as the analysis of the collected information to identify the scope and dimension of the model system of indicators. We also need to build the system of efficiency indicators of lean production at industrial enterprises and to discuss some practical features of applying the model along with possible restrictions of its use. Based on the theoretical results of the previous empirical studies, the authors have developed a comprehensive tool for the assessment of parameters of lean manufacturing, using objective, quantitative, directly measurable indicators. The proposed model includes nine areas of quantitative performance measurement covering a wide range of activities and key processes in an organization. The model allows to understand the efforts needed for the implementation of the ideas of lean manufacturing in a structured way. The developed regulations can be used as a framework for both the assessment of efforts needed to implement the principles of thrift in various enterprises of the industry, defining a model and a direction for further development and the improvement of methodological provisions for future theoretical and empirical research.
