Abstract:

Processes of spatial defragmentation and transformations of the legal and regulatory aspects of spatial development have caused an upsurge of interest in the topic of space in Russian economic studies. It is, therefore, a pertinent task to reveal and describe the key stages in the evolution of economics in relation to space. The article is aimed at tracing the significance and role of space in economics in different periods. Conceptually, the study relies on theories and concepts describing various aspects of the spatial organization of the economy. The methodological framework of the study comprises methods of analysis and synthesis, abstraction, generalization and classification. As a result, we identified and described four stages in the evolution of economics in Russia in relation to the role that space played in the research agenda. Our analysis has also brought to light eight groups of concepts that contributed to the development of the theory of spatial organization of the economy.
